"I hope that we can show respect for the good people on all sides of the gay and lesbian marriage issue – including couples making lifetime commitments to each other who are seeking greater legal protections, and those of us who believe marriage is a sacrament and want to safeguard religious liberty."Well, he did finish by throwing a bone to religious liberties, but the cynic in me suspects that as thing will go, the sentence could be read as "I hope that we can show respect for the good...gay and lesbian...couples making lifetime commitments to each other who are seeking greater legal protections." That tends to be the way these thing actually get implemented. He was more correct when he asked whether "sodomy [should] be elevated to the same constitutional status as race and religion".
Gay "marriage" sure feels a lot like a front in the culture war which we didn't so much lose as just outright forfeited. So much the worse for all of us.
